Leonard Peña

Mr. Peña is a founding member of Peña & Soma, APC. He focuses his practice on the areas of bankruptcy, creditor's rights, and complex business litigation. Mr. Peña has represented a variety of debtors, secured creditors, and unsecured creditors in sophisticated Chapter 11 reorganization cases throughout the western United States and has extensive negotiation, mediation, and courtroom experience. In particular, Mr. Peña represented the debtor in a $27,000,000 condominium project in West Hollywood, CA, a San Diego mental health hospital, and the committees of unsecured creditors holding claims in excess of $40,000,000 in the bankruptcy cases of several failed dot-com companies. He also has extensive experience representing bankruptcy trustees in Chapter 7 cases. Mr. Peña has assisted trustees in prosecuting avoidance actions, such as fraudulent transfers, preferential transfers, asset sales, and related transactions. In addition, he has represented banks, finance companies, real estate lenders, equipment lessors, and individuals in state and federal courts. Mr. Peña represented these parties in a variety of matters, including fraudulent conveyance and preference litigation, conversion and fraud cases, lender liability matters, actions for breach of contract, real property litigation cases, foreclosures, receiverships, and federal appeals. Mr. Peña has extensive experience obtaining pre-judgment remedies, such as temporary restraining orders, preliminary injunctions, attachments, and pre-judgment writs of possession. He is also experienced in pursuing post-judgment collections remedies.

Mr. Peña was admitted to the California Bar in 1997 and holds degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles (B.A. 1993) and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (J.D. 1997). He served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Leslie Tchaikovsky, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of California. Mr. Peña is a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and a member of the Bars of the Central, Southern, Northern, and Eastern Districts of California, as well as the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Julie A. Soma

Ms. Soma focuses her practice on the areas of bankruptcy, creditor's rights, and complex business litigation. Prior to joining Peña & Soma, APC, Ms. Soma was a bankruptcy litigator with Weinstein, Eisen & Weiss, LLP, where she prosecuted numerous bankruptcy cases for bankruptcy trustees. Most notable was Ms. Soma's work for a bankruptcy trustee to recover in excess of $9,000,000 for defrauded investors in a Ponzi scheme. Ms. Soma was also a bankruptcy counsel to several national mortgage lenders and managed more than 200 open cases at any given time for her clients.

Ms. Soma was admitted to the California Bar in 1995. She holds degrees from the University of California, Riverside (B.S. 1992) and Southwestern University School of Law (J.D. 1995), where she received the American Jurisprudence Award for the Legal Profession and was a Note and Comment Editor for the Southwestern Journal of Law and Trade in the Americas (1994-1995). Ms. Soma served as judicial extern to the Honorable Samuel L. Bufford, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Central District of California and the Honorable David G. Sills, Presiding Judge of the California Court of Appeal (4th District, 3rd Division). Ms. Soma is also a member of the Bars of the Central, Southern, Northern, and Eastern Districts of California, as well as the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
